What is
Success By 6?
Success
By 6 – Brings people together for children by mobilizing the community
to understand and support the needs of our youngest citizens. (Birth
– 6)
Goal:
Every child in Comanche County will start school healthy and ready
to learn.
Success
By 6 is all about doing what’s best for our KIDS.
History
- United
Way of Lawton-Fort Sill Success By 6 initiative began in 1999 and
is now in its sixth year. Lawton SB6 has received $235,000 in grant
funding from a $50 million Bank of America grant to United Way of
America to support early childhood issues.
- In
Lawton, the grant funds have been used to support early care and
education through:
- Grants
to childcare providers who are improving their Stars rating
- Increasing
the number of children in the four-year-old program
- Partnering
with the Lawton Public Schools Parents As Teachers’ Program
to provide parent education.
- Creating
child immunization awareness.
- Developing
Early Literacy Programs
- Lawton’s
SB6 has been instrumental in leveraging the Bank of America funding
so that over $1 million per year additional funds are coming into
Comanche County for needed early childhood programs."
Currently
Success
By 6 is:
- Partnering
with the Comanche County Health Department to provide Parenting
and Reading Tips to parents through the Women, Infant, & Children
program.
- New
donated books are distributed to the parents at the end of each
presentation.
- Coordinating
the Lawton READS program. (See the Early Childhood Literacy Link
for more information). Volunteers are always needed.
- Distributing
"Read to Me" Bibs, Owner’s Manual Parent Guide, and
a golden book to all the new Moms in the four area hospitals.
- Partnering
with the Lawton Public Library to enhance early childhood literacy.
- Partnering
with Great Plains Resource & Referral to provide information
about quality childcare (See the Childcare Link for more information).
